Manufacturer Warranties
A manufacturer warranty is offered by the manufacturer of the HVAC equipment. Nearly all manufacturers offer a 5-year warranty but it can usually be extended to 10-years if the equipment is registered within 60 days of installation or the specified terms. These warranties cover manufacturing defects and the related repairs required. Manufacturer warranties are government regulated so the law requires that consumers have access to the limited warranty prior to purchasing the product. Additionally, you’re not legally required to register to maintain your limited warranty protection but manufacturers can offer incentives to encourage product registration.
Labor Warranties
Labor warranties cover the costs associated with labor for your HVAC system. Most manufacturer warranties cover the cost of parts but not labor, and that’s where labor warranties come in. The cost of labor can add up to a significant amount of money. This is especially unwelcome in the event that your system breaks unexpectedly and you didn’t plan for the costs.
Homeowners Insurance
Homeowners insurance is not a warranty but provides protection in events that may not be covered by your HVAC warranty. For example, it covers events like a tree branch falling, lightning strike, etc., and the cost of replacement due to these events. Homeowners’ insurance won’t cover normal wear and tear or breakdowns due to an old system.
Home Warranties
Home warranties for HVAC systems are specifically designed to cover breakdowns that occur from normal use. With home warranties, you pay annual or monthly fees and a service fee which most homeowners find much easier to handle than paying out of pocket for unplanned breakdowns. The amount of coverage for your heating and air warranty varies based on the warranty plan you select.
